Lexus came to our company wanting to put together something elegant based on the theme “Masquerade Party” and needed to keep the UX super-friendly and non-initimidating. As the designer on the project, I knew that I had to keep the aesthetic of the design treatment immersive and to have the navigation completely accessible at all times. The site makes use of the beautiful video and sound as an introduction to the masquerade theme. Then, the theme continued on with photo collages as the navigation to entice the user to explore other sections: The Video Gallery, Photo Gallery and Events pages. There were a lot of unique transitions between sections to engage and submerge themselves into the experience.

In Expendables 2, all of the action heroes are bAck!! Bruce, Sylvester, Arnold, Jason, Chuck and the crew all show up in this destructive overlay. With this explosive thriller, war is the game and action is the name, so we broke out the effects. First, the title sequence rolls and then features a page-wide “On August 17th” dropping into the trailer like it was magnetized. Then, as the cinematic action starts, a big explosion sends sparks and debris everywhere out of the screen, causing it to crack! The concrete on the borders take a beating, as well – getting more and more destroyed all throughout the trailer. At one point, Arnold throws a car door, and it bounces out of the scene – the screen takes more damage. Finally, as the fighting ensues, there is a huge explosion that shatters the users’ screen completely, all-the-while, leaving a smoky fallout. And, the final sequence, an airplane crashes and burns, sending metal and shrapnel out towards the user. The Expendables 2 skull logo then appears and sends the trailer to its end.
The most challenging part about the F.E.A.R III 3D destructive trailer was to take a 2D video trailer and make it appear 3D, where users could experience themselves within the F.E.A.R III’s world. F.E.A.R III was a game that told a story about an uneasy alliance between two men against an evil force, and I wanted to illuminate the inherent dissonance by really darkening this up, and making it scary in the third dimension. When the user first visits, an iron age gate with a concrete pre-loader will show on the screen. Once validated and fully loaded, the gate opens to reveal the trailer. A few seconds into the spot, at the scene where Alma Wade appears, the entire site shakes abruptly by her presence. Sporadic shaking continues to sprout as a result of this initial shock. As Point Man shoots, 3D bullets fly through the screen causing it to crack, continuously. Then Paxton’s hand levitates his enemy and debris in the surrounding area will float. His power radiates from his hand and he channels this power at his enemies, it becomes very overwhelming and subsequently burns the Crave logo and video player. As the animation continues, a monster leaps and attacks the user. In the process, it destroys the already shattered screen. The F.E.A.R logo will be render onto the video player, and the animation ends.
This hub, featuring Adam Carolla for the SPEED channel, was constructed with our client’s demographic in mind. I wanted to create the UI aesthetic to resemble a car dashboard to give the targeted demo the comfort of feeling at home. A lot of the design inspiration comes from car parts, and the header area features an animation that resembles a speed race effect. The hub features a video section, photo gallery and host bios. The main focus of the hub was the 30-second video commercial of Adam Carolla in the top left center area.
Meet Paul – a skinny, funny, charismatic alien dude who is being pursued by the secret government. For this hilarious overlay, we chose the RV for the setting. It starts out with the “bird scene” where the RV hits a stray bird and then meets Paul who revives the bird back to life in the movie. The scene centers around Paul appearing out of nowhere in front of the RV and then playing it cool at the corner of Area 51 and the Extraterrestrial Highway. I used a green screen capture of the alien and integrated it into the overlay – it looked funny seeing Paul just cross the street, having fun, right in front of the truck!
A movie that features heavily armored cars racing each other equipped with rockets and explosives calls for some drastic measures when creating an overlay. For Death Race, we wanted to take advantage of the overly ominous ordinance and blow some things up! So, when the user initiates the overlay, a car explodes out of the page, immediately being followed by another fiery vehicle that flips the first car over. The fire and explosions consume the entire page! Once the damage clears, the pack shots, title treatment, and release messaging reveal themselves, along with a video player, hosting the 30-second trailer.
For the Conan the Barbarian 3D destructive trailer, we wanted to provide something that adequately depicted this vengeful tale of cinematic struggle. His sword is his power, and it is front and center in this piece. When the user first views the scene, Conan is battling the army of soldiers that killed his father. He takes a few of them out after the flames ignite and reveal the trailer page within the tribal environment setting. But, he doesn’t stop there! As he swings his sword, the users will then experience the screen crack. Conan then journeys into enemy territory where the soldiers come back with spiked boomerangs that fly out of the trailer and in the process it shatters the already cracked screen is varous directions. As the destruction ensues, the metallic logo is revealed as the fallout of glowing embers drift down out through the screen.
The Marvel icon, Captian America shows up on SuperHeroHype.com. With the game being released just a few weeks away, and with the fan base of the site being so “tuned in” to classic comics, this was an important 3D destructive game trailer to get right.
As Captain America’s adventures against the Red Skull and HYDRA unfold, users experience the most extravagant action of Captain America saving the day. Captain America has to fight many evil forces after he enters Hydra’s castle. The action begins when the Captain crashes through the window causing the glass to fly out at the viewer in 3D. As he jumps down from the top to surprise his enemy, the room fills with smoke, bricks and debris fly towards the user, and the explosions cause the video player to melt! Captain America attacks his enemies with a weapon which cause electricity to spark all over the place. Captian America then throws his shield and it bursts out of the trailer at the audience, as a final surprise.
